Last Son – Episode 1 – PilotScene 1The opening scene for Last Son shows a flat-screen TV as Channel 52 News is covering a story.
Reporter: “We are live on Topaz Lane where we just witnessed Superman stop this apartment complex from burning to the ground. It isn’t salvageable but there were no fatalities or injuries in what could’ve been a fatal fire had Metropolis’ guardian angel not come to the rescue.”
As the reporter finishes talking we see a statue of some kind get thrown right at the TV. A man’s furious scream is heard in unison as the TV is completely shattered and the statue is broken in two. We pan down to the ground where we see that the statue on the ground is a bust of Lex Luthor. The camera pans over across the room where we see Lex Luthor with his hands on his bald head looking outside of his office window at the city of Metropolis with an angry expression on his face. Mercy Graves enters the room and looks at the destruction and isn’t at all surprised.
Mercy Graves: “Ahem, sir. I’ll have someone clean that up for you right away.”
Mercy begins to walk away but Luthor speaks up.
Lex Luthor: “Mercy....wait.”
Mercy stops in her track and looks at her boss who is still looking out of the window.
Mercy Graves: “Yes, sir?”
Luthor speaks up as he continues gazing at the beautiful and vibrant city of Metropolis. He speaks in a calm, almost sad tone but there’s still a rageful tremble in his voice.
Lex Luthor: “Why do they love him so much? Why can’t they see what I see? Why can’t they see the alien. Why can’t they see the threat that he is to us? He’s a ticking time bomb and nobody is doing anything to stop him or even contain him. I’ve tried to pull strings covertly for these past few years as he’s saved kittens from trees and stopped plane crashed but… it’s not enough. He is the end of this world. He came to this planet and is viewed as a savior… he’s viewed in this Christ-like manner by all of them. I see him for what he truly. He is an anti-Christ.”
Mercy Graves: “Never took you for a religious man, Lex.”
Lex Luthor: “I didn’t mean it literally. It’s simply an analogy. I’ve always felt like he’s just biding his time and trying to gain everyone’s trust before something clicks in his mind and turns him into the monster he’s destined to become. Power is a strong drug, believe me Mercy, I know. I know that it’s just a matter of time before he enslaves us all. I think it’s time I did something about this resurfaced problem.”
Scene 2We cut away to a shot from behind a hunched over Clark Kent carrying a stack of papers constantly getting bumped into in a crowded office area which appears to be the main floor of the Daily Planet. Clark drops the papers on a desk and the camera pans over and Lois Lane is sitting at the desk.
Lois Lane: “That’s every newspaper we have on Superman? I can’t believe we’ve written this many pieces on him in only two years.”
Clark Kent: “Yeah, it’s odd. I’ve been in Metropolis just about as long as he has.”
Lois gives Clark a confused look.
Lois Lane: “How is that even relevant, Smallville? Don’t answer that. We’ve got to get to work on this Superman piece. It’s the first we’ve heard of him since that incident in Washington D.C.”
With the mention of Washington D.C, Clark seems to get anxious and seems to stumble on what he’s going to say until he’s saved by Jimmy Olsen who steps up in between Lois and Clark’s desk.
Jimmy Olsen: “I’ve got a decent picture of Superman from the apartment fire.”
Lois doesn’t look away from her computer as she’s typing.
Lois Lane: “I’m not the editor, Jimmy. I’m just a writer. Bring it to Perry.”
Jimmy Olsen: “But I wanted to make sure it fit with the article you were writing.”
Lois Lane: “Still needs to go through Perry.”
Perry White walks out of his office and walks towards Lois, Clark and Jimmy. Lois mutters under her breath.
Lois Lane: “Speak of the devil…”
Perry White: “What are you three working on?”
Clark remains silent.
Lois Lane: “I’m writing the Superman article about him saving a cat out of a tree.”
Perry White: “Watch it, Lois! You need to get rid of that cynicism regarding the big blue boyscout. He sells newspapers as if it’s not the age of the internet.”
Lois Lane: “I’m sorry, I just can’t help but feel a little upset towards a man with such extraordinary abilities only using them essentially ordinary problems. It’s great that he’s helping people again but why did he have to leave in the first place? Why isn’t he combatting these threats to National security? Surely, a man who is almost god-like and beloved by the people can continue to do great things regardless of the government’s involvement.”
Clark finally speaks up.
Clark Kent: “Lois, don’t you think he might’ve stopped out of respect for the government?”
Lois Lane: “Then why is he back now? If he’s going to do anything, why would he only help with matter where he really isn’t needed. I’m sure the Metropolis Fire Department had the situation well in hand until Superman came in and stole the spotlight.”
Scene 36 Months Ago
Washington D.C.We see a shot of what looks like Barack Obama leaving the podium in The White House which then pans over to Vicki Vale, GNN TV Reporter, standing in front of a camera reporting on The President’s speech.
Vicki Vale: “In case you’re just tuning it, the President has just announced that the Superman who has been been helping people all over the U.S. is no longer working for the U.S. Government after aiding the National Guard in fighting off multiple attempted acts of terrorism. The President has informed us that Superman should no longer be considered our ally and if he is seen, he should be considered a potential threat.”
Scene 4We’re back in present day where we see Clark Kent approaching his apartment. Before entering he uses his x-ray vision to make sure his apartment is empty before unlocking the door and walking in. He puts his briefcase on his couch and sits down. He turns on the TV. He flips it over to the news and the headline reads.
Superman Returns. Protector or Super-Terrorist?He immediately turns the TV off and stands up. He loosens up his ties and takes his shirt off revealing the Superman suit underneath. He takes his Clark Kent clothes off and flies out the window. He flies at an unusually fast speed as he zooms over the cities of Metropolis, Gotham and Coast City before flying over the oceans until he reaches nothing but ice. He stops in front of a large ice mountain and stands in front of it.
Superman: “Krypton”
With the sound of his voice saying his home planet, the ice begins to move and forms a doorway. He walks in casually.
Scene 5Superman is in his Fortress of Solitude as he approaches an empty room of ice after walking past several full rooms of artifacts from Krypton. A hologram of Jor-El, Superman’s father, appears in front of him.
Superman: “Hello Father.”
Jor-El: “Kal-El, I must remind you that I am not your father but a program created to mimic your father’s consciousness.”
Superman: “I know, I just need some fatherly advice right now… and this is the closest thing I have.”
Jor-El: “Understood, Kal-El. What is your inquiry?”
Superman: “The people of Earth, the people I protect, seem to be at odds with each other over me. Some of them appreciate me and are welcoming while others seem to think of me as some kind of menace and a potential dictator.”
Jor-El: “There will always be people who oppose you, Kal-El. You need to forget about them and continue to do good no matter what. You need to get over this internal conflict and be the beacon of hope that humanity desperately needs. Be their guardian and be what they aspire to be but don’t try to control them… don’t be their god. Don’t make the same mistakes that the leaders of Krypton did that led to our home’s destruction.”
Scene 6Superman is shown flying over a forest area on his way back to Metropolis from his Fortress of Solitude when suddenly something hits him and sends him spiralling down into the forest. After denting the ground beneath him, he starts to get up but looks up and sees Wonder Woman standing above him with a dagger and shield in hand. Wonder Woman charges at Superman and Superman tries to dodge her attacks and he begins to fight back but is definitely holding back against her.
Superman: “I don’t want to hurt you!”
Wonder Woman takes a swing with her dagger as Superman moves out of the way but the dagger slices his arm and he looks at it shocked as a single drop of blood drips down his arm and while he is distracted by seeing his own blood for the first time, Wonder Woman hits him in the face with her shield knocking him out as Last Son cuts to darkness.
