Just happened to be browsing out of curiosity at NBA free agent acquisitions. Maaaaan do these guys get paid! Believe me, this is new. The salary cap went from 70 million last year to 94 million for this upcoming season. That's a 24 million jump, and these teams have 12-15 players to pay. It's kinda ridiculous when bench warmers are being paid 9-10 million a year, roleplayers are being paid 15-18 million, and mediocre phonies (DeMar DeRozan, Bradley Beal) are being paid the max, which is in the high 20s/early 30s.

So the Lakers roster is currently D'Angelo Russell, Brandon Ingram, Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson, Lou Williams, Timofey Mozgov and Luol Deng. Looks like they want to surround the young guys with vets which is fantastic but I really don't know what to think of these prices. Deng is a great veteran leader for these young guys but the prices and length... IDK. We'll see.

Maybe the only ones who aren't are Danny Ainge, Pat Riley, and Peter Holt of the Spurs... I guess that's what happens when you give owners this much money. I'd project the starting lineup looks something like: Russell, Ingram, Deng, Randle, Mozgov You could also say to put Deng on the bench with Clarkson at the 2 and Ingram at the 3, but I'd put Ingram at SG until he can get stronger and add more of a frame. Before last season could ever end, I said the Lakers can improve their record by 20 wins, considering Kobe's gone. Honestly, be content. I know the Mozgov deal is likely to be horrific, and probably the Deng deal will also in 3 years, but this season should look fine for you guys.

Al Horford is expected to make his decision tonight with the frontrunners being the Washington Wizards and Boston Celtics.

You're a a Miami fan and watched Luol Deng last season, what do you think of him on this young Lakers team in a Warriors like system? Deng, I love him, of course, him being a former Blue Devil on my Heat squad, coming in when LeBron left. I got to see him for two years. He's a defensive-minded player, and could hold LeBron in check when they played the Cavaliers, noting the first game back for James on Christmas '14. Deng is a solid NBA starter, so much so is I can't see him coming off the bench. With that said, he specializes in defense. He can have flashes of scoring, putting in 20 or 30 points, but most of the time you'll be lucky to get 12 out of him. He's not a scoring threat, and he's not going to be your primary scorer. His career high was 19.0 PPG back in Chicago in the 2013-14 season, and he averaged 12.3 PPG last year with the Heat... He hovers around 33-34% from 3-point range in his career, which is Walton's specialty, of course. I think this is a big grab because Luol Deng can help mentor Brandon Ingram and hopefully help Ingram become a better defender, and you need some veteran leadership from a guy who can actually play 30+ minutes a night, and that's just not who Nick Young or Metta World Peace are. He's a good player, but I still think the majority of your offense is going to come from Russell and Ingram, two players who I've heard Walton wants badly. Deng's role will be to defend the best opposing scorer on the floor to make sure Ingram doesn't have to. He'll be able to guard the likes of Durant and Klay, to give you an idea.

In Boston's pitch to Kevin Durant, they brought in Tom Brady (which is fine) and Kelly Olynyk.... Kelly Olynyk is a star so Durant's obviously made up his mind. Sorry, that was major sarcasm.

Yeah, that's kinda what I figured but it's good to hear from someone who watched him play a lot last season. I'm hoping the Lakers can find another vet to help establish a culture in the locker room and maybe try to snag a young player like Allen Crabbe.

I don't mean to sound delusional because it's not likely but do Deng and Mozgov make LA a playoff team? (not a championship team of course lmao)

(not a championship team of course lmao) It's not delusional to think the Lakers can make the playoffs. Again, once the Lakers came back on the Heat from a 25-10 deficit once Kobe called it quits and let the young guys take over to win the game, I felt this team would be 20 games better than last year. So with that said, 37-45 is around where they can be. I don't think that brings this team into the playoffs, and I highly doubt Mozgov is that much of a difference, but we'll see where it goes. You guys are definitely flirting with winning 40-50% of your games.

They very well could make a huge jump in their winning percentage but this next season we should be looking for individual growth in the players and chemistry being built within the young core.
