Beware The Bat – Episode 9 – Metropolis Part One
Scene 1
Beware The Bat opens up in a beat-up Motel room where Dick Grayson is sitting on a bed with a large duffel bag in his lap. He goes through it looking at a grappling gun, batarangs, a pair of eskrima sticks and what look like smoke grenades. At the bottom of the bag is a ski mask, a black thermal, some gloves and black cargo pants. A car door can be heard closing outside, Dick quickly gets up and peeks out of the window through the blinds. He looks across the street from his Motel room at Milos Grapa exiting his car and entering the Ace O’ Clubs bar.
Scene 2
The next scene starts with an outside shot of Arkham Asylum where it then transitions to Joker in his high-security padded cell pestering a guard that's guarding the door.
Joker: “Hey, Henry. Buddy, isn't almost time for my date with Miss Harley? I’ve been spending my whole day getting dolled up for her. Look at me! I’ve never looked better, my skin's never been whiter, my teeth have never been yellower, my hair’s never been greener and my eyes have never looked more bloodshot.”
Henry the Guard: “Doctor Quinzel cancelled your therapy session for today. Looks like you got stood up clown”
Joker: “You know, Henry, I really doubted how close you and I could get but now I realize that we are going to be very important to each other's lives… I’m going to end yours and you, you’ll be my first kill once I get outta here.”
Henry turns to Joker while grimacing. He points his nightstick at Joker.
Henry the Guard: “Is that a threat?”
Joker: “A threat? God, no! I’m insane, I don't know what I’m saying. This is just how I bond with people!”
Scene 3
The next scene transitions into Dr. Harleen Quinzel’s office where she has the TV turned onto the news. She goes over paperwork as she mumbles to herself.
Harleen Quinzel: “What am I doing wrong? What do I have to do to make him love me?”
Her mumbling stops when she hears the words 'Bruce Wayne’ pop up on the news.
Vicki Vale: “Bruce Wayne has just landed in Metropolis! Gotham's favorite son surprised everyone in Metropolis when his private jet landed at Metropolis airport where he was quickly swarmed by reporters.”
The news shows footage of Bruce Wayne walking through the crowd of media who surround him and ask him multiple questions.
Lois Lane: “Lois Lane, Daily Planet. Why the sudden interest in Metropolis?”
Bruce Wayne's eyebrows are raised slightly when he hears the words Daily Planet. He stops walking and turns his attention to Lois.
Bruce Wayne: “Well, I’ve got a little bit of business here with Wayne Enterprises and never really took the time to catch all the beautiful sights Metropolis has to offer. Maybe, I’ll even catch a glimpse of Superman if I’m lucky. I know I just landed but I’m already happy with what I see.”
Bruce winks at Lois before walking off and ignoring the rest of the media. Harleen watches with tears in her eyes.
Harleen Quinzel: “He flew all the way to Metropolis and didn't even tell me… and now he's sleeping with other women. I… I… I don't know what to do.”
Harleen wipes away her tears and sits up in her chair before hitting a button on her phone as she speaks into it.
Harleen Quinzel: “I’d like to reschedule a session with patient 52, The Joker.”
Secretary: “When would you like to schedule the therapy session?”
Harleen Quinzel: “Within the hour, make it a priority.”
Scene 4
The next scene cuts over to Bruce Wayne driving a luxury car through the streets of Metropolis as a phone call with Alfred goes through the car speakers.
Alfred: “Sir, I've arranged a business meeting for you to go to as you requested.”
Bruce Wayne: “Thanks, Alfred. Are there any events that Bruce Wayne could attend so I can look busy in case Batman needs to get to work?”
Alfred: “Well, you might be opposed to this but Lex Luthor is having a gala for the opening of his new hospital in downtown Metropolis.”
Bruce Wayne: “You know how I feel about Lex, I don't know if I really want to go to an event where I have to listen to him ask me about politics and business offers.”
Alfred: “I realize that, sir but he’s basically monopolized the city of Metropolis which is why the only business meeting anyone could realistically take with Wayne Enterprises is LexCorp. I also figured it could get you closer to the media since The Daily Planet are going to be covering the event. By the way, why the sudden interest in a Metropolis newspaper?”
Bruce Wayne: “They’re the only papers that have consistently put out articles on the Superman. They have to have a source close to him. I need to know more about him, I gotta know if he's a threat or if he's actually someone to be trusted. Anyway, Alfred, I have to get off the phone. I’m parked across the street from the Ace O’ Clubs. I wanna scope out the area and find Dick before he does something stupid.”
Bruce Wayne parks his car in a nearby alley and puts on a hoodie before he exits his car and starts walking.
Scene 5
The next scene shows Milos Grapa in the Ace O’ Clubs tending the empty bar. Bruce Wayne walks in under a hoodie showing bad posture and he looks a little dirty. Bruce has a seat at the bar and talks in a false raspy voice.
Bruce Wayne: “I’ll have a jack and coke.”
Bruce puts some money on the bar and slides it over to Milos as Milos makes the drink.
Milos Grapa: “Haven't seen you around here before. You new?”
Bruce Wayne: “Yeah. Name's Floyd. Just relocated here from Star City. My work was getting scarce with Green Arrow running around.”
Milos Grapa: “Oh man, I hear ya. I’m from Gotham and the Bat’s driven me out of the city. I hear Green Arrow’s got like a teammate now, is that right?”
Bruce Wayne: “Yeah, they’re calling him Speedy, from what I hear.”
Milos Grapa: “So, you looking for work out here? I’m only out here to lay low for a bit before I try to find work in like Hub City or someplace like that. No way am I going to try anything with Superman flying around.”
Bruce Wayne: “I don't know, how bad can he be? He’s always looked a little soft to me compared to the Bat and Green Arrow. Superman's probably just going to slap you on the wrist and hand you to the cops. Batman or Green Arrow will probably break your bone or you’ll take an arrow to the knee.”
Milos Grapa: “I don't want to risk pissing off a guy who can lift cars, fly and shoot lasers from his eyes.”
Bruce Wayne: “He can shoot lasers from his eyes?”
Milos Grapa: “That's what I’ve heard.”
Milos Grapa’s phone buzzes. He looks at the text, it’s from an unknown number at it reads.
“Shipment's ready in the back.”
Milos looks at it confused but when he looks up Bruce is gone.
Scene 6
Bruce is shown outside of the bar as the sun begins to go set. He looks at the motel across the street and walks towards it. He enters the lobby and sees the guest list sitting at the empty front desk. He reads through it and finds room number 38 which is rented by Dick Grayson. Bruce shakes his head in disappointment before he starts looking for the room. Bruce walks up the stairs and through the hallway before finding room number 38. The door's unlocked so he walks in. The room is empty but wind blows through the sole window in the room. Bruce looks out the window and only gets a direct view of the front door for the Ace O’ Clubs. Bruce's phone begins to ring, he answers it.
Bruce Wayne: “What is it, Alfred?”
Alfred: “You’ve missed your appointment with LexCorp. I managed to make an excuse on your behalf and they wanted to reschedule.”
Bruce Wayne: “Fine, as long as it's not tonight. I need to find Dick, first. Then, I’ll have time to take care of things with Wayne Enterprises.”
Alfred: “Don't forget Master Bruce, you have that gala you must attend tonight. It's look rather suspicious if Bruce Wayne didn't attend a big event in his first night visiting Metropolis.”
Bruce Wayne: “I’ll do my best to show up but I feel like I’m getting close to finding Dick.”
Scene 7
The next scene shows Dick Grayson hopping from rooftop to rooftop near the Ace O’Clubs in his all black stealth outfit and mask. He’s crouched near the edge of a building behind the Ace O' Clubs as he watches Milos Grapa walk out to the back alley looking puzzled. Dick looks like he's about to pounce on Milos when in the corner of his eye he notices a woman in an all black latex bodysuit scale down to the alley from another building. She pulls out a whip and whips it at Milos Grapa's feet and trips him. She walks over towards him and stands above him. Dick Grayson watches intently.
Milos Grapa: “Oh God, Selina. Penguin sent you to kill me didn't he?”
Catwoman: “He might've.”
Milos Grapa: “Listen, you don't gotta kill me, Selina. You don't have take that weirdo’s shit anymore. I know you think you owe him somethin’ but you don't. You can come work with me for Two-Face!”
Catwoman: “I don't wanna work for Harv, he's unstable.”
Milos Grapa: “Yeah, and Penguin is a prime example of a mentally stable human being.”
Catwoman: “That isn't the point, Milos. I can't just walk away from one crazy boss to go work for another. You know I’m only working for Penguin until I’ve paid him what I owe him.”
Milos Grapa: “Get over it! He didn't save you like you claim he did. He just took advantage of you and if you can't see that then just get this bullshit over with and kill me!”
Catwoman pulls her whip up as if she's about to use it across his face but then simply puts it away and disappears into the shadows. Milos gets up and dusts himself off and right before he's about to go back inside, Dick jumps down and attacks him with his sticks. Milos uses his strength to keep the surprisingly skilled masked Dick Grayson at bay.
Milos Grapa: “Who the hell are you!?”
Dick stays silent as they fight but eventually Dick sweeps Grapa's leg and gets him down and holds him there with his foot on his throat.
Milos Grapa: “What are you? Penguin's Plan B?”
Dick Grayson: “What? No. This is about justice. It's time you paid for what you did.”
Milos Grapa: “The hell did I do to piss you off? Could you be specific?”
Dick Grayson: “The flying Graysons. You shook them down for money and when they didn't pay up, you killed them in cold blood.”
Milos Grapa: “What? I didn't kill them!”
Dick Grayson: “Liar!”
Milos Grapa: “Wait a minute… you're their kid! Holy crap. I swear I didn't kill them, sure I was shaking them down for money but I wasn't going to kill them. I was trying to get money out of 'em when suddenly some sniper took them both out! So, I ran!”
Dick Grayson: “You… you didn't kill them?”
Milos Grapa: “No!”
Dick takes his foot off of Milos and steps back looking a little shocked. Milos starts to get up.
Milos Grapa: “Well, looks the like the death of your folks sure did a number on ya. Shit, I thought you were gonna kill me or someth-”
Suddenly as Milos is stood up straight, he's cut off when a bang is heard nearby and a bullet goes through his skull right in front of Dick. Dick is shocked and looks around frantically and notices the back of an armored man in some kind of helmet on a faraway rooftop with a sniper rifle leaning on his shoulder. Dick can't make out any of the details but quickly flees the scene.
