It’s been a wild year in wrestling and WWE more specifically. From Batista returning to the ring to CM Punk walking out all the way to Sting making his grand debut, there have been many memorable moments in the company this year and I’m here to present my awards for this year in the WWE. The awards list features the best and worst in a lot of categories including best and worst superstar, best and worst feuds and more! We’ll start off with the worst of each category and go from there.
The first category that has come to my mind would be worst feud. My pick for this award would be the feud between The Bella Twins. The reason being is that this feud amounted to nothing as the two are back together as a cohesive unit and seemingly nothing came of the feud. This feud gave us not so great moments including the wonderful segment with Jerry Springer. Just a terrible feud overall, I’m sure there were other feuds that were just as horrible but this feud left an impression on me for all the wrong reasons. The only foreseeable way that this feud could have been made better would have been if it had an actual payoff because the copout of having Brie as Nikki’s “slave” for a month. To go along with this, I have a bone to pick with the writers and the diva’s division because it seems as though they can only have one storyline at a time which is probably why the diva’s division is so bad but that’s a story for another day!
The next category is for the worst pay-per-view of the year. This would definitely be Elimination Chamber. I didn’t watch it when it first aired but I have since watched highlights and looking at the card, it wasn’t that good of a show. The Chamber match wasn’t bad overall but I feel as though so much more could have happened/been done. Simply put, having The New Age Outlaws as the defending tag team champions in 2014(!) is just a bad business decision, I mean come on. Also, Titus O’Neil and Darren Young facing off on a pay-per-view is just a big no-no for me. Granted, the feud may or may not have had good hype because I honestly just was not watching at that point. All in all, Elimination Chamber was quite probably the very worst WWE pay-per-view of the year.
The next category/award is the worst debut/worst character/career thus far. This category basically encompasses those that debuted in the year 2014 and have had a failed career thus far on the main roster. This award goes to…Bo Dallas! I just he just didn’t BOlieve enough. HAHA! But no, in all seriousness Bo Dallas’ career on the main roster just hasn’t lived up to the hype that was put out for him. He’s injured right now but even before that, he didn’t really have a whole lot going on besides his “BOlieve” shtick that actually got quite annoying as time went by. But no, for real, Bo Dallas was literally the worst with an honourable mention going to Adam Rose who wasn’t much better but Bo Dallas had so much potential but just failed to capitalize on it at all.
Finally we get to the big one…worst superstar of the year. I could go the easy route here and say John Cena because I’m not too fond of him but I’m going to go with Brock Lesnar here…I mean yes, he is the WWE World Heavyweight Champion right now but that doesn’t mean anything considering he’s only appeared a handful of times this year. Yes, I get that he has a part-time contract but the fact that he’s only been here a few times and hasn’t really done much (broke the streak and won the title? COME ON JOEY!) before proceeding to leave again for another few months before coming back at a random time. All in all, Lesnar would have to be the worst superstar of the year for me and I anticipate that I will get a lot of flak for this one but it’s my opinion.
Now it’s time for the fun stuff and more positive stuff! The best of the year awards! We’ll start off where we started with the worst, with the best feud of the year! For me this would be The Authority vs. Team Cena. This is mainly because it signified a HUGE change in the WWE with The Authority finally being ousted at Survivor Series and the match itself building up people as future stars (Harper, Ziggler, etc.) and Sting finally debuting. This feud seemed to have it all and ranks at the top in terms of feuds of the year. An honourable mention for this award would probably be The SHIELD vs. Evolution back in the spring which was a pretty great feud in itself.
The next category is the best pay-per-view of the year and that of course would go to Wrestlemania XXX! So many memorable moments came from this pay-per-view including The Streak being conquered by Brock Lesnar and Stone Cold, The Rock and Hulk Hogan sharing a drink in the ring to Daniel Bryan finally becoming WWE World Heavyweight Champion. This PPV had it all and is very worthy of winning this award!
The next award is for the best debut/best character/best career so far and it goes to…RUSEV! This one just seems oh so obvious because Rusev’s character has been so great from the start and he just continues to get better each and every week. Lana has also been a great addition to the roster (not just for her good looks!) because she can talk and has a great character just as Rusev does! I’m looking forward to seeing what 2015 is going to bring for Rusev and Lana!
And now…the main award…SUPERSTAR OF THE YEAR! The WWE was absolutely ridiculous in giving this award to Roman Reigns. I feel as though the superstar of the year is…Dolph Ziggler. Yes, that Dolph Ziggler. He’s had such a phenomenal year, albeit he didn’t win the big one but he’s just had so many large moments and he is on the cusp of breaking through the glass ceiling and once he does that, it’s onwards and upwards. He reminds me of a young Shawn Michaels and we see where that went!
Well that’s it for my 2014 WWE Awards. Some unpopular opinions for sure and plenty more to be discussed from this crazy year in wrestling and that’s why, I’m leaving it up to you guys! This now transitions to an open discussion about the year and all that has happened so discuss away!
