The Wrestling Universe
The Backstory
In April of 2016, the professional wrestling world was shook to its very core. WrestleMania 32, billed as the biggest WrestleMania of all time, was brought to us from Arlington, Texas. Late 2015 plans looked great on paper and people were genuinely excited about the direction the wrestling juggernaut was heading for The Show of Shows. An unforeseen plague of injuries to the main roster and some horrifically narrow-minded booking left us with a WrestleMania 32 card that was … less than stellar. Even with a weakened roster and a poor card, nobody could’ve predicted the monumental flop WrestleMania 32 turned out to be. The AT&T Stadium failed to sell-out, it done an abysmally low amount of PPV buys across Europe AND the WWE Network actually lost subscribers due to a boycott started by a member of the Reddit forums online. Driven mad with distress and his inability to see why things weren’t working as he had planned, Vincent Kennedy McMahon inexplicably shut WWE’s doors and refused to broadcast any more events.
To say the rest of the business felt a knock-on effect from WWE effectively ceasing operations is an understatement. With a weak Ring of Honor and a floundering Total Nonstop Action positioned as the two biggest North-American companies it wasn’t long before the overall interest in pro-wrestling began to wane. The WWE superstars were in a Catch 22 situation; they could sit on their asses at home and collect their pay-cheques whilst seeing out their contracts with WWE or they could opt out of their contract with no pay package and wrestle for pittance with TNA or ROH. The independent scene in North-America was essentially killed by the end of the Summer of ‘16. TNA and ROH in an effort to become the alpha male of the North-American market absolutely raided the independent scene for all it was worth forcing companies like Pro Wrestling Guerilla and Chikara to close it’s doors.
In the Far East, the major players were also on their way out. AJPW had it’s TV deals pulled before the summer which allowed NJPW to effectively swallow the company. This influx in talent was badly needed as just before WWE closed their doors they happened to raid NJPW of the majority of its major players. NJPW actually seemed to be in a position to advance even further than they had previously but their NJPW World (their answer to the WWE Network) experiment failed big time and cost time millions of Yen. In September of 2016, NJPW went into liquidation and declared bankruptcy.
In December of 2016 TNA and ROH threw in the towel. The wrestling world had fallen so much in the space of a year that it was now non-profitable to be in business. Once news struck that the European and Mexican organisations had stopped running cards, Dixie Carter and David Smith knew the gig was up. They collaborated to produce one final card (entitled Bound for Honor) in early December and that was that. The wrestling world as we knew it was over. There was no promotions - global, regional or otherwise - left and it seemed we had finally drawn a line under the long, storied history of professional wrestling.
That is until a mystery group of financiers known only as “The RWF” swooped in and bought out the contracts of those tied down to the basically defunct WWE. The mystery group then announced they would give financial backing to six wrestling promoters to open up the doors of their very own company and they could run it however they saw fit. The RWF had thrown the wrestling business a lifeline and as for the six lucky promoters? They had the whole wrestling universe to chose their rosters from.
The Format
Right folks, that’s just a little backstory I whipped up, I hope you were entertained - not that it really matters. So basically we are going to co-exist in a wrestling universe and try and tell a magnificent alternative story to what we see going on in the real version of the wrestling world. I believe this is going to be the first group booker in a long, long time that will actually work and I think it will become a staple of RWF. Although I’m sure this will be competitive, it isn’t actually a competition - there is no league and there is no winner - but we will do end of the year awards and I’m sure the good folk of RWF will be weighing in to give their insight, criticism and praise. This isn’t rigid like most group bookers are, in fact we’re only going to have one rule and that is that you must have some form of monthly output. Whether a company in our universe had 2 shows a week or 1 show every two months is up to themselves, it’s at the promoters digression much like it is in the real world. For the purposes of allowing injuries to be cleared (and hell, it coincides with the backstory) this universe begins in January 2017. We will conduct a draft in this thread. We will draft until each promoter has 30 active wrestlers and then we will conduct a mini-draft where you can draft 5 additional non-wrestling talents.
Rules.
1. Snake Order: This means every round of drafts, the order is flipped.
2. 8hrs between picks max. You can send me a list of 50 - 100 if you want and let me know if I should make the pick asap or wait till your 8hrs. Please tag whoever is next in the draft order after you make your pick. Once 8 hrs has passed you don’t need to wait for me to give the go ahead, if you’re next, just make your pick. Missed drafts will be made up at the end.
3. Tag teams are separate. Jimmy Uso & Jey Uso, for example, are two different picks.
4. Women wrestlers count here too.
5. No non-wrestling talent. So you can’t draft Conor McGregor or Tom Brady.
6. No retired wrestling talent. Unconfirmed retirements allowed though. So for an example; Daniel Bryan would not be eligible to be drafted, yet Tyson Kidd would.
7. You should post your draft picks as follows;
"Promotion Name selects Talents Name as their number of draft pick."
Example;
123 Wrestling selects El Torito as their 21st draft pick.
7. You should post your draft picks as follows;
"Promotion Name selects Talents Name as their number of draft pick."
Example;
123 Wrestling selects El Torito as their 21st draft pick.
