RAW: X-Pac challenged Rob Van Dam for the Intercontinental Championship and Van Dam denied his challenges but was assaulted week after week until he got fed up and accepted the challenge for a match at Backlash.
Tajiri put on a display of his Cruiserweight skills for various weeks until Raw Owner Ric Flair decided that at Backlash he would defend his championship against Billy Kidman, The Hurricane, Spike Dudley and Christian in a gauntlet match!
Brock Lesnar tore through the Raw roster week after week until he and Paul Heyman issued an open challenge to anyone in the back which was accepted by "The World's Strongest Man" Mark Henry!
Trish Stratus won a battle royal to earn a shot at the WWE Women's Championship at Backlash.
SMACKDOWN: Smackdown Owner Vince McMahon started off the new era by getting rid of the 24/7 rule on the Hardcore Championship and forcing Maven to defend it against D-Von Dudley which he would lose on the March 28th edition of Smackdown.
William Regal and Chris Benoit began a feud over the European Championship which started during a match on Smackdown where Regal hit Benoit with the Knee Trembler knocking him unconscious. The two battled in consecutive weeks until Vince announced that they would face off for the title at Backlash.
The Hollys and The Hardys would both stake claim to the #1 contendership to the World Tag Team Championship and they would face off two weeks straight in double DQ matches until Vince got fed up and booked a Ladder match between the two at Backlash.
Triple H claimed that he didn't need to defend his championship but Vince said that he did and booked The Rock, Booker T, Bradshaw and Diamond Dallas Page in a fatal four way match for #1 contendership which would be won by The Rock.

Backlash Fallout
RAW: Jazz got a rematch for the Women's Championship the night after Backlash but was unable to capitalize and Trish Stratus retained her championship but was attacked by Lita and the two would go on to face off in a series of tag team matches in which Lita's team would come out on top in them. A match between the two for the title would be booked for Judgment Day.
Brock Lensar and Paul Heyman would celebrate Lesnar's victory over Mark Henry at Backlash by destroying the entire Cruiserweight division when they faced off in a rematch of the gauntlet from the night before. They would run roughshod over the roster for a number of weeks before Hulk Hogan stepped in and attacked Lesnar setting up a showdown between the two.
X-Pac demanded a rematch against Rob Van Dam for the Intercontinental Championship but he was denied by Ric Flair and told that he had to get to the back of the line and Edge attacked Van Dam following a match against Scott Hall.
Raw Owner Ric Flair announced that at Judgment Day, he would be holding a battle royal featuring every member of the roster to decide who will be the new World Heavyweight Champion!!
SMACKDOWN: William Regal claimed that he would be the European Champion for a very long time and that nobody in the back can stop him. Rikishi made his presence felt and beat Regal down before holding up the championship.
The Hardys and Billy & Chuck feuded back and forth with The Hardys seemingly having the upperhand heading into the Judgment Day pay-per-view.
D-Von Dudley issued an open challenge to anyone in the back for the Hardcore Championship which was accepted by...Kane! Kane attacked Dudley and beat him down before being stopped by Al Snow who ran in and saved him. Vince McMahon booked Kane vs. D-Von Dudley at the pay-per-view.
Triple H proclaimed himself WWE Champion for life and that if The Rock can't beat him, no one can. Maven came out and said that he is ready to step up and challenge Triple H and Triple H laughed and told him that he's a scrawny piece of trash. He turned around and was leveled by the Clothesline from Hell by Bradshaw! A triple threat match for the championship was set up for Judgment Day.

Judgment Day Fallout
RAW: Edge celebrated his championship but was immediately confronted by his tag team partner Christian. The two argued about what it meant for their future as a tag team and culminated in Ric Flair setting up a match between the two at King of the Ring for the championship.
Kurt Angle would go on to say that he is the greatest wrestler in WWE history and that nobody will take the World Heavyweight title from him and he is confronted by Chris Jericho who says that Angle got lucky and that he wants a shot at King of the Ring which he gets!
SMACKDOWN: Rikishi would continue his pursuit of the European Championship and would challenge William Regal on the May 30th edition of Smackdown where he would come out victorious for the championship.
D-Von Dudley and Al Snow continue feuding with Kane over the Hardcore Championship with Al Snow winning the championship on the May 23 edition of Smackdown and Kane winning it back the week after on May 30. Raven joins in and joins with Kane and the two are scheduled to face off in a tag team match at King of the Ring.
Triple H proclaimed that he was still WWE Champion but Bradshaw and Maven claimed otherwise. Vince McMahon decided that the only way to settle it is to vacate the WWE Championship. Triple H is pissed and Vince McMahon says that at Summerslam, a brand new match will be introduced to declare a new champion!
KING OF THE RING TOURNAMENT PROGRESS: Brock Lesnar, Rob Van Dam, X-Pac and Mr. Perfect joined the tournament from the Raw side of things and Lesnar defeated Van Dam whereas Mr. Perfect defeated X-Pac to set up Lesnar vs. Perfect at the pay-per-view.
William Regal, Chris Benoit, Booker T and Test joined the tournament from the Smackdown side of things and Regal defeated Benoit whereas Booker T defeated Test setting up Regal vs. Booker T at the pay-per-view.

King of the Ring Fallout
RAW: Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman parade around with a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. Paul Heyman states that Brock Lensar will become the youngest champion in the history of the WWE. Lesnar and Kurt Angle have pull apart brawls week after week until they had a contract signing stipulating that they couldn't touch each other until Summerslam when they would face off.
Edge and Christian continued their feud with Christian claiming that Edge's win was a fluke. Edge claimed that it wasn't and asked what he could do to prove himself and Christian proceeds to challenge him a...Tables, Ladders and Chairs match for the title at Vengeance! Edge quickly accepts and the two have a staredown.
Promos begin playing for a new superstar that will be debuting soon and it is revealed to be...Rey Mysterio! He debuted the week before Vengeance and called out The Hurricane for a match at the pay-per-view for the title which The Hurricane accepted!
Chris Jericho cut a promo regarding his future in the WWE and said that Kurt Angle beat him handily at King of the Ring but he is still perfect. This leads to a feud with Mr. Perfect which will culminate at the Vengeance pay-per-view!
Trish Stratus and Lita's feud continued with Lita getting the upperhand on Trish for several weeks until Trish was finally able to defeat her and Ric Flair set up another match between the two at the Vengeance pay-per-view!
SMACKDOWN: Raven turned on Kane and beat him down several weeks in a row before challenging him to a match at Vengeance for the Hardcore Championship which Kane accepted setting up a hardcore showdown.
D-Von Dudley and Al Snow continued teaming together beating several jobber tag teams before calling out The Hardys and claiming that they are the better tag team and that they want to take the World Tag Team titles from them! The Hardys accept the challenge setting up a match at Vengeance.
Rikishi proclaimed that the European Championship meant nothing to him as he was so much better than it. Rikishi's former tag team partner Scotty 2 Hotty came out and called Rikishi a shell of his former self which led to Rikishi destroying Scotty in the middle of the ring and saying that anyone in the back that wants to face him can and Lance Storm came out and hit Rikishi with a Superkick.
Triple H, Maven and Bradshaw continued their threeway feud with Bradshaw and Maven teaming up on a few occasions to take on Triple H in handicap matches. Vince announced that after Vengeance, a number of qualifying matches will take place to determine who will participate in this brand new match.
