RAW: Ted Hart refused to take a disqualification loss to Edge and demanded a rematch but Edge tried to dodge him week in and week out until Shane McMahon scheduled a submission match for the Intercontinental Championship at Backlash.
Kane made his return to Raw by demolishing all of the Cruiserweights in the division (besides Jimmy Jacobs) before being confronted by Batista who would challenge him to a match at Backlash which Kane accepted.
Jimmy Jacobs put out an open challenge to anyone in the back which was accepted by newest Raw superstar Lance Storm and a match was booked for the Cruiserweight title at Backlash.
Newest Raw superstar Maven made his debut by calling out World Heavyweight Champion Sting and demanding a shot at the title but another new Raw superstar, Chris Benoit also staked a claim for a title shot and Shane McMahon booked a triple threat match for at Backlash.
SMACKDOWN: Smackdown's newest acquisitions Rob Van Dam and Rey Mysterio teamed up and challenged The Hardys in a non-title bout and shockingly got the victory which gave them a shot at the titles at Backlash.
Eddie Guerrero sustained an injury at a live event and was forced to vacate the United States Championship on April 1, 2004. General Manager Stephanie McMahon announced a tournament which would conclude at Backlash. The final two were Mr. Perfect and Chris Jericho.

Road to Judgment Day
RAW: Ted Hart put out an open challenge on the April 19, 2004 episode of Raw for the Intercontinental Championship which was accepted by Charlie Haas and the two put on a barnburner with Hart retaining his title but a rematch was quickly scheduled for Judgment Day.
Lance Storm lost the Cruiserweight Championship to the debuting Paul London on the April 26, 2004 episode of Raw. London would be subsequently be attacked by Gregory Helms who stated that it is time for him to take back his championship and a match was booked for Judgment Day.
Kane's reign of terror on Raw continued as he demolished anyone who stepped in his way until Chris Benoit stepped up and promised to take Kane out and challenged him to a match at Judgment Day which Kane would accept.
Maven transformed himself into a suit-wearing, cocky son of a bitch following his World Heavyweight Championship victory. He claimed that there was nobody in the back that could defeat him until he was hit with a Superkick by Shawn Michaels who claimed that he is ready to take back what is truly his. Shane McMahon scheduled a showdown for the title at Judgment Day.
SMACKDOWN: Ron Simmons and Booker T teamed up as The New Heat and ran through the majority of the teams in the tag team division before challenging Rob Van Dam and Rey Mysterio to a championship match at Judgment Day which the champs agreed to.
Rhyno, Shelton Benjamin and D-Lo Brown all staked a claim for a shot at the United States Championship and the champion, Chris Jericho told them that none of them were worthy of his title but Stephanie McMahon booked a fatal four-way match at Judgment Day for the title!
John Bradshaw Layfield made the mistake of calling out The Undertaker, who would return to Smackdown and plant JBL with a Tombstone Piledriver before telling him that at Judgment Day, he would rest in peace.
The feud between John Cena and Triple H for the WWE Championship was clearly not over as Triple H continuously assaulted the champion until challenging him to a Hell in a Cell match at Judgment Day which Cena would not hesitate to accept.
