WWE DRAFT F.A.Q.
Q: How will the cross-branded champions work? A: The first set of cross-branded champions, Roman Reigns, The New Day, and Charlotte, will be considered non-exclusive until they are no longer a cross branded champion. Once they are no longer non-exclusive, they will sign an exclusive contract with either Raw or SmackDown. Every contract for Raw and SmackDown will include a “cross-brand champion” clause, where if any competitor wins the WWE World Heavyweight, WWE Tag Team, or WWE Women’s Championship, they are considered non-exclusive, and will be non-exclusive until they are no longer champion, whereas they will return to the roster they have a contract for exclusively.
Q: How will injuries be effected? A: The currently ineligible injured Superstars will be allowed to sign an exclusive contract upon their return to action, after WWE Doctors clear them to return to the ring. Any injuries that take place after a Superstar is injured will be handled differently. The length of the injured Superstar’s contract is frozen, but the star will still be payed a guaranteed downside per month. Example: John Cena has a 3 year contract for Raw, but 13 months in, is injured for 6 months. When he returns to the ring, he still has 23 months left on the contract, the amount of time he had left when he was injured.
Q: How will Superstars making the transition from NXT to the main roster work: A: When a Superstar transitions from NXT to either Raw or SmackDown, he or she may request a contract with a certain brand. If they don’t request a certain brand, the General Managers of both shows will enter a bidding war over the star, whereas he/she will be signed to the highest bidder. Superstars making the transition can also privately request to one of the brand’s General Managers to be brought to the main roster secretly, and sign a contract with one of the brands.
Q: Will talents be able to bypass NXT and go right to Raw or SmackDown? A: All signed talents must spend a minimum of 6 months in NXT before coming to the main roster. However, exceptions may be given to those of special cases, as has been done recently with AJ Styles.
Q: Will new titles be introduced, or old ones return, in order to flesh out both the brands? A: There are currently no plans to (re)introduce titles, but there is always the possibility of new titles being introduced down the road.
Q: How will the non-exclusive Superstars be handled? A: Non-exclusive Superstars have the option of appearing on both Raw and SmackDown. They have the personal option to only appear for one brand, but can appear on either or both brands at any time they wish.
Q: How will cross-branded champions choose a #1 Contender? A: The cross-branded champions are non-exclusive, and thus, will be able to appear on both brands. A #1 Contender for these titles will be decided based on the champion’s own opinion, as well as recent successes of stars on both Raw and SmackDown.
Q: Will the WWE Pay-Per-Views be split between brands? A: For the foreseeable future, WWE Pay-Per-Views will all be cross-branded.
Q: Can a tag team be drafted together in the draft? A: Yes, a team can be drafted together during the draft. In order to help keep the rosters even, the next opposing pick can be used on either another team or two singles stars. The teams that will be considered will be announced before this week’s Raw. If a trio is drafted together, then the next opposing pick can be used on either another trio, a team and a singles star, or 3 singles stars.
Q: Will every Superstar be drafted between now and Money in the Bank? A: No, not everyone will be drafted between now and Money in the Bank. Whoever isn’t drafted will be allowed to sign exclusive contracts to either Raw or SmackDown as undrafted free agents.
Q: How will the announce teams be handled? A: The Raw and SmackDown announce teams will be announced during Money in the Bank. There will be a 3-Man announce team for Pay-Per-Views with announcers from Raw and SmackDown. Other personnel (ring announcer, interviewer, etc.) will also be announced during Money in the Bank.
Q: Will Raw be brought down to 2 hours? Will SmackDown be brought to 3 hours? Or will they stay the same? A: The WWE is considering both options at the moment. Currently, the prevailing opinion is bringing Raw back to 2 hours, despite this not being the smart move business-wise.
